By golly! There is hope for the world!

Unfortunately, the good people of the United Kingdom don't see it that way:

The falling standard of children's television is laid bare today in a wide-ranging report that shows the golden age of informative, original and high-quality shows for all ages has drawn to a close.

The vast majority of children watch shows on dedicated digital channels.

Children are increasingly being fed a diet of American imports, cartoons and repeats as broadcasters stop investing in popular home-grown shows, says Ofcom, the television regulator, in its most comprehensive analysis of the children's TV market.

...Producing high-quality, original programmes for children, which reflect their cultural identity, has long been regarded as a vital part of the remit of terrestrial public service broadcasters such as ITV and BBC.

But the report finds that the proportion of children's programmes made by these channels had dropped dramatically from 22 per cent in 1998 to only four per cent last year.

The decline was particularly marked among commercial public service channels, with the hours broadcast on ITV1 falling by 60 per cent and on Five by 58 per cent...

The Brits think they've got problems? Most of the American programming they're complaining about is made in Korea...and the Phillipines...and God knows where.

As far as I could see, this isn't about industry or jobs (outsourcing, importing,...), but about quality cultural value for children. I'd say they're right.
