Early October Box Office

The Mojo predicts that two animated films will be atop the Top Ten.

With an aggressive marketing campaign and stellar reviews, Alfonso Cuaron's Gravity is poised to easily take first place this weekend. The real question at this point is how high it can go, though it's hard to imagine an original Fall release debuting above $40 million or so.

1. Gravity - $41.2 million
2. Cloudy 2 - $21.2 million (-38%)

3. Runner Runner - $11.8 million
4. Rush - $6.7 million (-33%)
5. Prisoners - $5.8 million (-47%)

Okay, so one is animated and the other is a hybrid. But nobody can say that Gravity doesn't have a lot of animation in it.

Add On: The Nikkster has Gravity doing better than Mojo's earlier prediction.

And as for last week's #1?

... Sony’s animated family film “Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2” brought in $4.7 million Friday and is heading for a $21 million second weekend. That’s a roughly 49 percent drop, and keeps it on track with the original “Cloudy,” which brought in $125 million domestically. ...

Add On Too: Meatballs has a good hold on its second weekend:

... Saturday was huge for #2 Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs 2 from Sony Pictures, up 112% from Friday, and aided by sneaks of the studio’s Tom Hanks-starring true life thriller Captain Phillips. Toon ended with $21.5M with a strong -37% hold and new $60.5M cume. “The 800 sneaks of Captain Phillips look to be at least 75% of capacity with sell-outs reported in every major city,” Sony tells me. Looks good for Sony and Hanks who both need another hit. ...

Add On Three: One more factoid about Cloudy 2: It has almost exactly the same 10-day domestic total as Cloudy Uno -- $60,557,000 vs. $60,474,555.

Add On Three: One hit, one miss:

"Gravity" launched with a robust $55.6 million, according to an estimate from distributor Warner Bros. Heading into the weekend, pre-release audience surveys indicated that the film would make no more than $45 million in its opening weekend. Meanwhile, "Runner Runner," the only other film that debuted nationwide this weekend, fell short of even the lowest projections with a disappointing $7.6-million start. ...
